Geology and Mineralisation
The Bathurst Island and nearby island all have Yampi Formation
sandstones with varying amount of iron units, the concentration
of iron ore in the area is known as the Kimberly Iron Ore
Hub. Bathurst Island is relatively greenfield and no exploration
drilling have taken place.
Deposits of iron in the Kimberley Iron Ore Hub are younger
in age than those being mined in the world famous iron ore
Pilbara region. The iron is contained within layered rocks.
It is visible as dark brown bands within the pale brown
colour and repetitive sandstones.
The mineralisation present on Bathurst Island seems to be
an intergrowth of iron and sand particles and the rock is
classified as Haematite Sandstone, with traces of detrital
tourmaline, zircon and monazite within the quartz and haematite.
The iron mineralisation present on Pluton Resources Irvine
Island is hosted in the Wonganin Sandstone and underlying
Yampi Formation sandstone. The iron ore requires beneficiation
to produce a high quality concentrate at >66% Fe and
low impurities and mass recoveries in the 40% range.
